Actor Samuel Leroy Jackson was born on December 21, 1948 in Washington, D.C. to factory worker Elizabeth Jackson. His father abandoned his mother shortly after Jackson’s birth and then died of alcoholism. Jackson and his mother moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where they lived with her family. Jackson attended Riverside High School and played the trumpet and the French horn until graduating.

Jackson attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, majoring in dramatic arts. He founded the Just Us Theater while attending Morehouse, and in 1968 he was an usher at the funeral of Martin Luther King Jr. In 1969 Jackson and several other students held the members of the Morehouse Board of Trustees hostage on campus until they agreed to administrative and curriculum changes. An agreement was made but Jackson was forced to leave Morehouse for two years. He returned and graduated in 1972.

While in Atlanta Jackson was involved with the Black Power movement and worked with Stokely Carmichael, H. Rap Brown, and movement leaders. He also joined the Black Image Theater Company which performed plays illustrating racial injustice and discrimination. Jackson met his future wife, Latanya Richardson, at the Company, and the two were married in 1980. The two had a daughter (Zoe) in 1982.

In 1976 Jackson moved to Harlem in New York City to pursue stage acting. In 1981 he landed a role in Charles Fuller’s Pulitzer Prize winning play A Soldier’s Play, where he met director Spike Lee. In the late 1980s and early 1990s Jackson acted in number of films including Coming to America (1988), School Daze (1988), and Goodfellas (1991) before entering rehabilitation for an alcohol and crack cocaine addiction. Following his release, he starred in Spike Lee’s Jungle Fever (1991), for which he won the Cannes Film Festival award for “Best Supporting Actor” and a New York Film Critics Award. Jackson claims that this opportunity came right when he was seriously considering a career in stand up comedy instead of film acting.

Jackson’s portrayal of “Jules Winnfield” in Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 film Pulp Fiction is widely considered his breakout role, and he was nominated for best supporting actor for the role at the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes. Although he is not the highest-paid actor in Hollywood, Samuel L. Jackson — whose 77-strong resume includes “Pulp Fiction” and “A Time to Kill” — is the only actor on Earth who can claim gross receipts greater than $5 billion.

Hey Guys! While high school and life can be stressful at times, sometimes we forget how important it is to take some time to relax. I can think of any better way to do that than my favorite pastime: yoga. For my capstone, I will be hosting a Yoga class to bring attention to mental health and how important it is to take care of ourselves. The class will be on February 21st at 3:30 in the CPAC. Ms. Hoffman has graciously let me take over one of her after school Thursday classes, and best of all, Mr. Monty Coggins will be leading!

While they are not required, I am also collecting donations for an organization called CVAN. CVAN is a shelter for abused women and their children here in Concord. They offer financial care and mental health programs to support women who have gone through traumatic events. If you would like to donate – there will be a box at the class. If you can’t make the class but would still like to help out, please reach out to me at school or via email with any donations you would like to make.- Kristen Sharma

Born 29 April 1899 in Washington DC, composer, bandleader, and pianist Edward Kennedy (“Duke”) Ellington was recognized in his lifetime as one of the greatest jazz composers and performers. A genius for instrumental combinations, improvisation, and jazz arranging brought the world the unique “Ellington” sound that found consummate expression in works like Mood Indigo, Sophisticated Lady, and the symphonic suites Black, Brown, and Beige, and Harlem.

Beginning keyboard studies at the age of seven, Ellington’s earliest influences were the ragtime pianists. He taught himself harmony at the piano and at 17, made his professional debut. Encouraged by Fats Waller, he moved to New York in 1923 and, during the formative Cotton Club years, experimented with and developed the style that would quickly bring him worldwide success and recognition. Ellington would be among the first to focus on musical form and composition in jazz using ternary forms and “call-and-response” techniques in works like Concerto for Cootie (known in its familiar vocal version as Do Nothin’ till You Hear from Me) and Cotton Tail and classic symphonic devices in his orchestral suites. In this respect, he would influence the likes of Monk, Mingus, and Evans.

The senior parking area is allowed for all grade students in the evening hours on Thursday. Athletes and actors may NOT use the faculty parking area behind or to the side of the Upper School.

ALL students attending either the playoff game OR the musical are REQUIRED TO PARK IN STUDENT PARKING on Thursday evening. Since we are hosting two large events, we need the parking at the CPAC and on Education Way along the wall, and US Faculty Parking areas to be reserved for on-campus guests. The senior parking area is allowed for all grade students in the evening hours on Thursday.

Jesse Owens is best remembered by sports aficionados as the man who upset Adolf Hitler’s Aryan Nation apple cart by not only winning four track and field gold medals (the first individual to do so), but setting or tying world or Olympic records in the process. Owens’ Herculean feat occurred during the 1936 Berlin Olympics — Hitler’s supposed showcase for his “Aryan racial superiority.” By winning his four events, Owens, at the age of 21, tied the world 100-meter dash record at 10.3 seconds, set Olympic records for the 200-meter dash (20.7 seconds) and the broad jump* (26′ 5 1/4″), and ran the first leg for the Olympic and world record-setting 400 meter relay team (39.8 seconds).

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was a noted scholar, editor, and African American activist. Du Bois was a founding member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP — the largest and oldest civil rights organization in America). Throughout his life Du Bois fought discrimination and racism. He made significant contributions to debates about race, politics, and history in the United States in the first half of the 20th century, primarily through his writing and impassioned speaking on race relations. Du Bois also served as editor of The Crisis magazine and published several scholarly works on race and African American history. By the time he died, in 1963, he had written 17 books, edited four journals and played a key role in reshaping black-white relations in America.

Madison Hardy showed great RESPECT for our fabric materials today when she reorganized the entire mess of fabrics in our storage cabinet. Thank you for keeping our materials in order Madison!

The Jazz Combo showed PASSION and played a super strong set at the UNCC Jazz Festival. They were tight, focused, and definitely swinging. The guest clinicians heard it too. We got amazing feedback on our judges sheets as well as during our 1-on-1 clinic with Dr. Will Campbell, who heads the jazz department at UNCC. The judges also gave “Outstanding Soloist” awards to Vincent Vaccaro, Davis Norton, Carter Otey, Abby Lowe, and Lucas Kabasakalian.

Sixteen members of our upper school MUN team went to Baltimore this weekend to compete at JHUMUNC. We brought home two awards this weekend: Declan Hurley received the Outstanding Delegate award and Abhi Gadudasu made Honorable Mention. Kate Nelson walked into her committee and by day 2 was highly involved in successful resolutions. Matthew Leonard was absolutely phenomenal in his committee AND a complete pleasure all weekend, serving as a great role model for our younger delegates and embodying MUN’s motto of “Decorum” perfectly. Jonah Presser, Rebecca Jones, Amelie Kadackal, Jessi Dickerson, and Lily Klett had the honor of participating in “Midnight Crisis” committees, which means they were awakened with political drama in the middle of the night and delegated until 4am. That takes serious PASSION.

The South African activist and former president Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) helped bring an end to apartheid and has been a global advocate for human rights. A member of the African National Congress party beginning in the 1940s, he was a leader of both peaceful protests and armed resistance against the white minority’s oppressive regime in a racially divided South Africa. His actions landed him in prison for nearly three decades and made him the face of the antiapartheid movement both within his country and internationally. Released in 1990, he participated in the eradication of apartheid and in 1994 became the first black president of South Africa, forming a multiethnic government to oversee the country’s transition. after retiring from politics in 1999, he remained a devoted champion for peace and social justice in his own nation and around the world until his death in 2013 at the age of 95.

ADVISORY AGENDA 2.8.19

Condoleezza Rice was born on November 14, 1954 in Birmingham, Alabama. Her mother worked as a teacher and her father as a guidance counselor. Rice earned a degree in political science from the University of Denver. In 1979, she studied Russian at Moscow State University. Rice graduated from University of Denver with a PhD in political science in 1981. One year later, she began her career as an assistant professor at Stanford University.

At Stanford, Rice enjoyed a successful teaching career. Rice was selected as the Provost of Stanford in 1993, making her the first woman and first African American to hold this position. Under her leadership, Rice led the university out of a financial deficit. While at Stanford, she also co-founded the Center for a New Generation, an after-school program for underprivileged students.

In 1989, she advised President George H.W. Bush’s administration on Soviet Union affairs. In 2000, she was appointed the National Security Advisor under President George W. Bush, becoming the first black woman to hold this position. In 2004, Rice was selected as the Secretary of State of the United States. She was the first African American woman to hold this position. She called her style of diplomacy “transformational,” a term that has since been used to describe other international policies.

Related image Marguerite Annie Johnson Angelou (April 4, 1928 to May 28, 2014), known as Maya Angelou, was an American author, actress, screenwriter, dancer, poet and civil rights activist best known for her 1969 memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which made literary history as the first nonfiction best-seller by an African-American woman. Angelou received several honors throughout her career, including two NAACP Image Awards in the outstanding literary work (nonfiction) category, in 2005 and 2009.

Angelou published several collections of poetry, but her most famous was 1971’s collection Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ‘Fore I Die, which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. ‘On the Pulse of Morning’ One of her most famous works, Angelou wrote this poem especially for and recited at President Bill Clinton’s inaugural ceremony in January 1993.

When the space shuttle Endeavour blasted off on its second mission, it carried the first African American woman into space. But Mae Jemison is more than an astronaut — she’s also a physician, a Peace Corps volunteer, a teacher, and founder and president of two technology companies.

Born in Decatur, Ala., on Oct. 17, 1956, Mae Carol Jemison moved to Chicago at the age of 3 and considers the city her hometown. The youngest of three children born to a maintenance worker and an elementary schoolteacher, she had a fascination with all things science from an early age. Jemison did well in high school, and attended Stanford University on scholarship at the age of 16. There, she attained her bachelor of science in chemical engineering and a bachelor of arts in African and African-American studies. She went on to earn her doctorate in medicine from Cornell University in 1981.

Last Friday Reah Syed and Holly Springate attended the Learning Through Languages Symposium at UNC Chapel Hill. Their chosen topic was “El activismo de las Mujeres en el Oriente Medio y África del Norte” and they completed a research paper and media presentation completely in Spanish. They were awarded the honorable mention (2nd place) in the category of Advanced Language Scholarship and the honorable mention for their specific region, the Middle East and North Africa track. !Enhorabuena!

Booker T. Washington

Educator Booker T. Washington was one of the foremost African-American leaders of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born into slavery in Virginia in the mid-to-late 1850s, Booker T. Washington put himself through school and became a teacher after the Civil War. In 1881, he founded the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Alabama (now known as Tuskegee University), which grew immensely and focused on training African Americans in agricultural pursuits. He was also a political adviser and writer.

“Black History is American History” – Morgan Freeman

Sojourner Truth (born Isabella Baumfree, c. 1797 to November 26, 1883) was an African-American abolitionist and women’s rights activist best-known for her speech on racial inequalities, “Ain’t I a Woman?”, delivered extemporaneously in 1851 at the Ohio Women’s Rights Convention.

Truth was born into slavery but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826. She devoted her life to the abolitionist cause and helped to recruit black troops for the Union Army. Although Truth began her career as an abolitionist, the reform causes she sponsored were broad and varied, including prison reform, property rights and universal suffrage.

Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Oswald demonstrated COURAGE and TEAMWORK when they volunteered to be examples during a college counseling activity with juniors without knowing what they were going to be asked to do.

GAP Year Fair:

All Upper School Students are invited to attend the GAP Year Fair on February 10^th from 1-4 p.m. at Providence Day School.

Spring 2019 Driver Education Program

This year, Cannon School has contracted with a local company to offer a driver education program during the spring semester. Classes and behind-the-wheel instruction will be provided by WatsOnWheels (https://www.watsonwheelsnc.com/). WatsOnWheels has agreed to offer Cannon students a discount and provide the course for $350 per student. The classes will be held Monday – Friday, April 1^st – 12th in Foundation Hall from 3:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Students must be 14½ years of age when the classes begin to be eligible to register. To complete the class, students must have thirty hours of class time and six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. After the class portion is complete, the instructor will coordinate with students individually to complete the behind-the-wheel requirements during their school drop periods or after school hours. The $350 fee is due on the first day of class and may be charged to the student’s Cannon School account or paid in the form of a check made out to “Watson Wheels LLC”.
