The Justice League….Are you looking for something to do this weekend? The 19th annual Festival of India is taking place in uptown Charlotte. The goal of the Festival of India is to expose people to the rich mosaic of different art, crafts, languages, couture, and cuisine from the various regions of India. The 19th Annual Festival of India takes place at the Belk Theater, 130 North Tryon Street on Saturday 9/14 and Sunday 9/15  (12:00pm to 7:00 pm)

There will be a meeting of all girls interested in playing softball on Thursday, September 12 at 11:30 am in the Annex of the Library.  Please plan to meet Coach Reynolds there if you are interested in playing softball in the spring of 2014!

This week the History Department will sponsor a three day lunchtime screening and discussion of the film 9/11. We will  continue in the movie room on Friday. All are welcome to attend.

Tennis Club: This Friday, the 13th, make sure you stop by to see Kate Beckman during lunch or during Student Choice in the hall outside Foundation Hall and let tennis club know who your partner will be for this years tennis tournament! Only rule: No two competitive tennis players may be partners.Thanks to everyone who signed up at the club fair and all those who forgot, don’t worry come on Friday with your partner and we will add you into the bracket no problem, including teachers and staff!!!!  And do not forget, it is perfectly fine if you have never even touched a racquet before, it still bunches of fun!

Relay For Life will be hosting an interest meeting in Foundation Hall during lunch today! If you’re interested in helping support or volunteer for CR Squared (the obstacle course that took place during Fall House Games), be sure to come to the meeting! We’ll start planning and talking about other fundraisers such as Pancake Day, Butter Braids, and CTC bake sales. All of our money raised will benefit the American Cancer Society. We look forward to seeing you there! If you can’t make the meeting but are interested, email Angela Poffenbaugh at apoffenbaugh@cannonschool.org.

Public Proclamation

On Wednesday 9/11, we will observe a moment of remembrance for the victims of the 9/11 attack.  Andrew Newman will read a brief statement during Advisory and then ask us to remain silent for a moment.  In addition, we will relax the dress code a bit and show solidarity by inviting students to wear Red, White, and Blue (no sweats, yoga pants, or leggings, please). We invite faculty and students to a relaxed dress day if you are willing to sport your patriotic colors as well.  Denim included.

 Calling all future House Impetus leaders! Are you interested in learning more about the inner workings of the House System? Are you crazy about the Gossage Cup? Are you a leader who hasn’t had the chance to shine at Cannon yet? This opportunity is for you! House Impetus is looking for 3 leadership interns (2 sophomores and 1 junior) for the 2013-14 school year. Interns will have the unique ability to learn about the new house system while helping their house leaders bring home this year’s Gossage Cup. Interns should be organized and have a go-getter attitude, but we are most interested in finding interns that exude Impetus’ motto – “Enthusiasm for Life.”If any of this applies to you, please e-mail Miss Kundel (lkundel@cannonschool.org) with your application. The application should be a 1 page, MLA formatted document that answers the following 2 questions. 1. Why are you interested in leadership? What specifically excites you about working in the House System? 2. What new ideas do you have for the House System? Mr. Chris Taylor demonstrated TEAMWORK and KINDNESS by allowing a group of overzealous sophomores to take over his classroom and white board at lunch in order to study for AP European History.

Philip Jewell, Chris Batchelor, Daniel Wyatt, and Ryan Murphy demonstrated TEAMWORK when they helped repair a wall hanging in the US hallway.

Chris Batchelor, and Vikas Kejriwal showed KINDNESS when they volunteered to open the wall in the library after Thursday morning’s parent meeting.

  Dom Pelucio made it into the 2013 North Carolina Honors All-State Orchestra!  Only students who made it into the Western and Eastern Regional Honor Orchestra last school year are allowed to participate.  Then the top students are selected based on audition.  Dom is the first student from Cannon School to make it into this orchestra so it is a huge honor!  Please help me celebrate him! way to show PASSION for your work Dom! He will perform in Winston-Salem on November 10th if you are interested in coming to the concert!

Calling all future House Impetus leaders! Are you interested in learning more about the inner workings of the House System? Are you crazy about the Gossage Cup? Are you a leader who hasn’t had the chance to shine at Cannon yet? This opportunity is for you! House Impetus is looking for 3 leadership interns (2 sophomores and 1 junior) for the 2013-14 school year. Interns will have the unique ability to learn about the new house system while helping their house leaders bring home this year’s Gossage Cup. Interns should be organized and have a go-getter attitude, but we are most interested in finding interns that exude Impetus’ motto – “Enthusiasm for Life.”If any of this applies to you, please e-mail Miss Kundel (lkundel@cannonschool.org) with your application. Cannon School’s men’s A Cappella group will be holding auditions for the 2013-2014 season.   Auditions will be held in the Piano Lab on Wednesday, September 4th during lunch (11:30am).   All gentlemen with vocal experience are encouraged to audition, especially those with vocal percussive skills.  See Mr. Herder or any member of “The Gentlemen” for more information.

 

The first Cannon Reading invasion is a way to celebrate our school’s passion for reading, to enjoy our school’s beautiful campus, and to share some quality time with members of our school community.The idea is simple- students, faculty, and staff bring something to read and “invade” a space on campus. Cannon Reading Invasion is not a book club but a time to come together during the school day to enjoy the act of reading and to remind our fellow Cougars that reading is an important part of our lives.The first Cannon Reading Invasion is scheduled for Friday, September 6th during student choice (1:05 pm to 1:30 pm). Cannon Theater Company auditions for both the fall production of Rhinoceros and the winter production of Much Ado About Nothing will take place after school from Wednesday August 28 through Wednesday September 4. Students can sign up for a half-hour audition slot and pick up audition info by the Cannon Theater Company bulletin board located in the Upper School building inside the stairwell near Foundation Hall. Those students with fall athletic commitments who would like to audition for the winter production but aren’t available to audition after school will be able to sign up for an alternative audition time. Students only interested in doing tech for theater productions don’t need to audition, and there will be more info on tech in the coming weeks.
