LAST CALL: High School students have a wonderful opportunity to participate in a service-learning trip to New Orleans. The trip organized by Rustic Pathways will be from June 3rd-June 11th, 2016. Students will experience Cajun food, music, and culture and also help rebuild homes devastated from Hurricane Katrina. Runners, athletes, environmentalists, everyone! Come here Pavel Cenkl speak in Foundation Hall today during lunch about his run across Iceland to learn more about climate change. About his route, he writes, “The route I followed is a 240-kilometer arc across the Icelandic highlands. The route follows trails, gravel roads, and faint paths among rivers, waterfalls, glaciers, thermal springs, and an open tundra landscape.” Cenkl is a professor, an outdoor enthusiast, an athlete, a coach, and a writer. In his words, “My hope is that by bringing attention to the responsibility of outdoor enthusiasts—runners, climbers, skiers, mountain bikers, cyclists—all of us—to serve as role models and as stewards of our planet in the face of our current climate crisis.”

The mission and purpose of this organization is:
* to promote scholarship and to recognize academic excellence in social studies in secondary school environments and the community.

* to provide through its local chapters opportunities for exploration in the social studies in secondary school environments and the community.

* to encourage interest in, understanding of, and appreciation for the social studies.

Candidates for membership should:
Have been in attendance at the school in which the chapter resides for the equivalent of one semester prior to being considered.
Have completed four semesters of courses in the field of social studies and be prepared to complete at least six semesters. The minimum grade point average for these courses is a weighted 3.67 or the numerical equivalent.
Have an overall cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.5 or the numerical equivalent.
Have a proven track record of interest and participation in service-related activities.
Demonstrate character and classroom behavior commensurate with membership in a social studies honor society, including a positive attitude and classroom participation, and a respect for the people of history.
