Ask the Experts!  College Admission Leaders on Campus!

Sophomores and Juniors will have an opportunity to hear from the Director of Admissions at UNC Chapel Hill and the Vice President of Admissions at Washington and Lee University on Monday, Feb 22 during Student Life.  Come prepared to ask any question you might have about the college search and decision-making process.  Is it true that colleges only care about grades and test scores?  Is it true that private colleges are too expensive to attend?  Is it true that you have to know what you want to major in before you can apply to a college?  Come find out the answers to the questions you have about applying to college.

Last chance to register for “Etiquette: Everything You Wanted to Know but Where Afraid to Ask”. Classes will be held during US lunch 11:15-12:00 on : 3/1, 3/3, 3/8, 30/10, and 3/15. The class cost is $75. Meals will be charged separately and are fixed to coordinate with the lessons; special dietary needs can be addressed. Registration is online at the Beyond The Bell page.

Professor, author, and environmentalist Pavel Cenkl is visiting Cannon on Monday, 2/22. Cenkl will speak to US Students in Foundation Hall from 11:15-12:00 about his 150 run across Iceland.

Juniors and Seniors!
RHO KAPPA Social Studies Honor Society is the only national organization for high school juniors and seniors that recognizes excellence in the field of Social Studies. RHO KAPPA provides national recognition and opportunities for exploration in the social studies.

The mission and purpose of this organization is:
* to promote scholarship and to recognize academic excellence in social studies in secondary school environments and the community.

* to provide through its local chapters opportunities for exploration in the social studies in secondary school environments and the community.

* to encourage interest in, understanding of, and appreciation for the social studies.

Candidates for membership should:
Have been in attendance at the school in which the chapter resides for the equivalent of one semester prior to being considered.
Have completed four semesters of courses in the field of social studies and be prepared to complete at least six semesters. The minimum grade point average for these courses is a weighted 3.67 or the numerical equivalent.
Have an overall cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.5 or the numerical equivalent.
Have a proven track record of interest and participation in service-related activities.
Demonstrate character and classroom behavior commensurate with membership in a social studies honor society, including a positive attitude and classroom participation, and a respect for the people of history.

If you meet the requirements above and wish to apply for Rho Kappa membership, please contact Ms. Eury (reury@cannonschool.org) or Mrs. Huffman (lhuffman@cannonschool.org) by Friday 19 February to request an application. Applications are due on Wednesday 24 February by 3 pm.
