Today is RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS! You are challenged to complete the act of kindness that is written on your card. One small act can spark a chain reaction, so see what you can do!

 Mr. Davis’ A block and B block classes will not drop today (Wednesday). They will be in rehearsal for Saturday’s Jazz Concert in the CPAC.

Next Tuesday, November 8th, we will celebrate our democracy and Election Day with KidsVoting! Please stop by the Private Dining Room between classes, during breaks and lunch, and during student choice to vote! The AP Gov students and ELP classes will also be collecting exit poll data. In order to fully celebrate our right to vote and democratic values, please wear your red, white, and blue that day! Since we are a precinct for regular voting and KidsVoting, students may not wear political shirts supporting particular candidates and/or issues since electioneering activities are not allowed too close the voting polls.

On Friday, Nov. 4 during lunch, stop by the table set up outside the lunchroom to meet with a representative from Oxbridge Academic Programs. Oxbridge offers students the opportunity to spend the summer in one of 10 locations across Europe and the United States. Students select from over 180 subjects such as Medicine, Law, Engineering, Drama, Photography and Fashion, in cities like Oxford, Cambridge, Paris, Barcelona, New York, Los Angeles and more. Stop by to pick up a brochure and learn more about this amazing summer study abroad opportunity.

Halloween is coming up quickly, and House Animus wants to make sure that our armed forces can get some treats too. The House is teaming up with Operation Gratitude in their Candy Buyback program  to collect any leftover candy you may have from Halloween (including chocolate, but no Pixy Stix please) and unused dental hygiene products. There will be collection boxes at the front and back entrances to the school  for everyone and one for teachers in the teacher workroom. All donations will be accepted until November 11 (Veterans Day). Engineering majors can partake in the school’s 3-2 program, in which students spend three years at Wesleyan and two in an engineering program.

Mix it Up day was created in 2002 to “encourage students to break down social barriers by sitting and interacting with someone new for just one day.” Cannon will be celebrating by giving each upper school member a sticker in advisory. Around the school, students and teachers will have the same stickers, and everyone is encouraged to talk to people with the same sticker by trying to introduce themselves and/or sit with this group at lunch.

[My name is Karlie Redfern and I’m a senior. For my Capstone, I am hosting a 4v4 COED volleyball tournament (all skill levels are encouraged to play :)) to raise money for the Military Order of the Purple Heart. My Grandfather received a Purple Heart during the Vietnam war and has done a lot for his community such as establishing many organizations as Purple Heart Supporters (High Schools, businesses, and even the Bank of America Stadium). He plays a big role in the organization and in my life so this means a lot to me. This is open to all upper school students and faculty who want to participate. The tournament is scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 3rd at 2pm (@ Cannon). This means those who are taking the SAT that day will have plenty of time to get to the school and play! The entry fee will be $20 per team ($5 per person) and those who aren’t able to participate can also donate money. You will pay upfront as you check in your team. The winning team will receive four $20 gift cards to Chick-fil-A and most importantly, bragging rightsI need to know your team (first and last name of each player) and team name or if you are dropping out by November 25th!!!! You can email, text, or tell me in person. If you are interested in playing but don’t have a full team, I will help you find other players or teams who are needing an extra player or two. As the date gets closer, I will send out more information on the format of the actual tournament and who is going to be playing who. It’s going to be very relaxed and fun so don’t worry if you’ve never played before! I hope you all will participate and please let me know if you have any questions about anything!

As the second quarter begins, please remember that the US library is reserved for academic pursuits.  Students who choose to study in the library agree to maintain a respectful and productive learning environment. Students who feel the need to take a break from their studies (ex. video gaming, fantasy football, socializing, etc.) should use the Commons.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 1ST  is MIX IT UP DAY!! Mix it Up day was created in 2002 to “encourage students to break down social barriers by sitting and interacting with someone new for just one day.” Cannon will be celebrating by giving each upper school member a sticker in advisory. Around the school, students and teachers will have the same stickers, and everyone is encouraged to talk or introduce themselves to people with the same sticker in the hallway or classes. At lunch, tables will be set up according to what sticker you have, and people can to sit with someone different or include someone new at their table.

TONIGHT is Movie In The Quad!!!! It is the night before House Games so you won’t have any homework :). Last year we had over 100 people attend so this year let’s make it 200! We will be showing Pitch Perfect as the movie this year. There will be all you can eat pizza for a small price of a $5. Come dressed up to enter the Costume Contest and win a Chick-Fil-A  gift card! We will have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. You can enter alone or as a group! The event will take place in the outside cafeteria with heaters. Bring blankets and pillows! There will be candy and popcorn since it is close to Halloween. 

Halloween is coming up quickly, and House Animus wants to make sure that our armed forces can get some treats too. The House is teaming up with Operation Gratitude in their Candy Buyback program  to collect any leftover candy you may have from Halloween (including chocolate, but no Pixy Stix please) and unused dental hygiene products. There will be collection boxes at the front and back entrances to the school  for everyone and one for teachers in the teacher workroom. All donations will be accepted until November 11 (Veterans Day). [My name is Karlie Redfern and I’m a senior. For my Capstone, I am hosting a 4v4 COED volleyball tournament (all skill levels are encouraged to play :)) to raise money for the Military Order of the Purple Heart. My Grandfather received a Purple Heart during the Vietnam war and has done a lot for his community such as establishing many organizations as Purple Heart Supporters (High Schools, businesses, and even the Bank of America Stadium). He plays a big role in the organization and in my life so this means a lot to me. This is open to all upper school students and faculty who want to participate. The tournament is scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 3rd at 2pm (@ Cannon). This means those who are taking the SAT that day will have plenty of time to get to the school and play! The entry fee will be $20 per team ($5 per person) and those who aren’t able to participate can also donate money. You will pay upfront as you check in your team. The winning team will receive four $20 gift cards to Chick-fil-A and most importantly, bragging rightsI need to know your team (first and last name of each player) and team name or if you are dropping out by November 25th!!!! You can email, text, or tell me in person. If you are interested in playing but don’t have a full team, I will help you find other players or teams who are needing an extra player or two. As the date gets closer, I will send out more information on the format of the actual tournament and who is going to be playing who. It’s going to be very relaxed and fun so don’t worry if you’ve never played before! I hope you all will participate and please let me know if you have any questions about anything!

Cougars On-Site Workshop: Friday, October, 28th 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.  Cannon School College Counseling will host a workshop for Juniors focused on developing the skills necessary to secure a summer job, internship or job shadowing experience.  An overview will be given on topics of decision making, cover letter and resume writing, interviewing and networking. Juniors must register by October 24th to attend, space is limited.  Email Kristin McClanahan at kmcclanahan@cannonschool.org to secure your spot.  Cougars On-Site will also be offered as a 4-day Winterm Course in January.  The course will be more in-depth than the workshop.  Students who complete the Winterm course will have a finished resume and cover letter, have experienced a mock interview, participated in an etiquette lunch and developed a networking contact list. More information will be released soon on how to register for Winterm courses.

The JV volleyball team remained undefeated in conference play by winning the JV conference tournament yesterday.  Congratulations to the team on a great season!!!!

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 26TH is Movie In The Quad!!!! It is the night before House Games so you won’t have any homework :). Last year we had over 100 people attend so this year let’s make it 200! We will be showing Pitch Perfect as the movie this year. There will be all you can eat pizza for a small price of a $5. Come dressed up to enter the Costume Contest and win a Chick-Fil-A  gift card! We will have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. You can enter alone or as a group! The event will take place in the outside cafeteria with heaters. Bring blankets and pillows! There will be candy and popcorn since it is close to Halloween. If you are interested in entering the costume contest, then see the rules below:

House Leadership meeting TODAY in Foundation Hall @ lunch.

The varsity soccer team will play Charlotte Latin School in the 2nd round of the NCISAA Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 4:15 pm on the stadium field at Cannon School.  Admission will be charge in accordance with the NCISAA policy of $ 7.00 for adults, $5.00 for students, children under the age of 8 are admitted for free.

The varsity soccer team will play Charlotte Latin School in the 2nd round of the NCISAA Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 4:15 pm on the stadium field at Cannon School.  Admission will be charge in accordance with the NCISAA policy of $ 7.00 for adults, $5.00 for students, children under the age of 8 are admitted for free. 

Freshmen:  During New Student Seminar TODAY, the College Counseling Team will meet with you to introduce the computer program you will be using with us for the next four years.   Bring your charged laptop to Foundation Hall during your drop.  You will receive an email on Wednesday from Family Connection with login information – do not delete this email as you will need it on Thursday.  This program will take the entire drop to complete.

National Arts Honor Society will meet TODAY at 11:30 in the US Art Studio. All visual (media and studio) art students are welcome, even if you were unable to make the last meeting. We will be voting for officers and choosing service projects for the year. Treats will be provided. 

Next WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 26TH is Movie In The Quad!!!! It is the night before house games so you won’t have any homework :). Last year we had over 100 people attend so this year let’s make it 200! We will be showing Pitch Perfect as the movie this year. There will be all you can eat pizza for a small price of a $5. Come dressed up to enter the Costume Contest and win a Chick-Fil-A  gift card! We will have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. You can enter alone or as a group! The event will take place in the outside cafeteria with heaters. Bring blankets and pillows! There will be candy and popcorn since it is close to Halloween. If you are interested in entering the costume contest, then see the rules below: 

Costume rules:
-All people participating in the costume contest must write their name, grade, and costume upon entering.
-All costumes must be school appropriate
-Each contestant can wear and present just one costume only.
-Participants must wait in the cafeteria until their name is called to enter the stage.
-Make the most of your time on the runway.

Cougars On-Site Workshop: Friday, October, 28th 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.  Cannon School College Counseling will host a workshop for Juniors focused on developing the skills necessary to secure a summer job, internship or job shadowing experience.  An overview will be given on topics of decision making, cover letter and resume writing, interviewing and networking. Juniors must register by October 24th to attend, space is limited.  Email Kristin McClanahan at kmcclanahan@cannonschool.org to secure your spot.  Cougars On-Site will also be offered as a 4-day Winterm Course in January.  The course will be more in-depth than the workshop.  Students who complete the Winterm course will have a finished resume and cover letter, have experienced a mock interview, participated in an etiquette lunch and developed a networking contact list. More information will be released soon on how to register for Winterm courses.
