FACT: Eating disorders (EDs) are complex medical and psychiatric illnesses that patients don’t choose; they are bio-psycho-social diseases. Several decades of genetic research show that biological factors play a significant role in who develops an eating disorder. A societal factor (like the media-driven thin body ideal) is an example of an environmental trigger that has been linked to increased risk of developing an eating disorder. Environmental factors also include physical illnesses, childhood teasing and bullying, and other life stressors. EDs commonly co-occur with other mental health conditions like major depression, anxiety, social phobia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Additionally, they may run in families, as there are biological predispositions that make individuals vulnerable to developing an eating disorder. FACT: Health comes in all sizes and just because someone is small, medium or large does not indicate they have an Eating Disorder. An Eating Disorder is a complex medical condition that can only be diagnosed by a physician and specially trained mental health professional.

Julie Lythcott-Haims served as dean of freshmen and undergraduate advising at Stanford University. She has spoken and written widely on the phenomenon of helicopter parenting, and her work has appeared on TEDx talks and in The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune. Julie holds a BA from Stanford University and a JD from Harvard Law School, and is pursuing an MFA in writing from California College of the Arts.

Congratulations to the Cannon School Dancers who showed PASSION when they received elite high gold recognition at Star Systems Regional Talent Competition on February 12 2017. The also took 1st place in the Teen Open Shooting Star Division. The dancers from the upper school class traveled to Albemarle, NC to compete against other dance companies in North and South Carolina and performed an open style routine. The team consists of Kailey Baez, Gillian Ventura, Noelle Nieske, Symone Walker, and Abby Jo McLuaghlin. Great job dancers!

Camp sessions for US students! Camp Cannon has a large selection of camps for US students that include topics such as: programming, writing, improvisation, service, photography, orchestra, and wrestling camps. Additionally, there are educational opportunities that include: SAT and ACT Prep courses, essay writing, Spanish, algebra, interview skills, and study skills. Be sure to pick up a camp brochure in the US office. Registration opens on March 1^st.

Emma Beier, Tyler Chase, Joshua Doolittle,  Constantin Dornburg,  Sydney Frazier, Matthew Godino, Carli Gordon, Logan Gray,  Tommy Jones, Olivia Kinsella, Paisley Lewis, Tamer Metwalli, Hadley Neal, Lydia Pinto,  Cameron Ray, Kristen Sharma,  Mitchell Skolaris,  Nathan Smith,  Mudi Tokunboh, Savannah Watkins, Trey Zamora attended the Sophomore College Road Trip to Clemson and Wofford. They all were excellent representatives for Cannon, demonstrating RESPECT throughout the day for tour guides, speakers, chaperones, the bus driver, and one another. They also showed PASSION by asking thoughtful questions throughout the day. Way to go sophomores!
