Wil Carey, Clint Harris, Zoe Smith and Izzie Ortiz displayed COURAGE  & TEAMWORK when they volunteered to perform for an 11th grade Student Life program.

Grace Ankrom is one of the friendliest students at Cannon and always has a big smile a welcome greeting. Thank you, Grace!

Alexa Meighan displayed KINDNESS when she wrote a thank you note to a speaker expressing her appreciation.

Many thanks to Lucas Kabasakalian, Floris Stratman, Carter Otey and Mr. Davis for kicking off the November 4 Open House with some Saturday morning jazz!  Ava Cooksey, Heidi Coppa, Emily Cleveland, Caroline Carr, Carter Otey, Chloe Winchester, Hope Springate, Rohan Handa and Jackson Cooksey demonstrated COURAGE, TEAMWORK and PASSION showing up on a Saturday morning to share their Cannon experience with prospective parents and students who attended the Open house.

The dining hall will be closed on November 10 from 8:45-10:00a.m.

After school make-up will now meet in the Academic Center.  As a reminder, after school make-up session begins at 3:15 pm.

The women’s basketball team is looking for two managers to help this season. Managers are not required to attend practice, but the team needs someone to help film home & away games as well as keep stats. If you have any interest please email Coach Drakeford

Congratulations to Cannon Theater Company for receiving four awards at this weekend’s NCTC Festival for their production of “Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind”: Patrick Dodds for Excellence in Stage Management, Zoë Smith for Outstanding Achievement in Assistant Direction, Mr. Macdonald for Excellence in Directing, and the cast for Excellence in Ensemble Acting. CTC is excited to now bring “Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind” to the Cannon community Thurs Nov 9, Fri Nov 10, and Sat Nov 11 7:00-8:15pm! This high octane 45-minute show had the NCTC audience laughing and occasionally even screaming. And with a high reliance on audience interaction, the show changes with each performance, so come see it more than once!

SENIORS! Tuesday, November 7th, is another drop-in help day. Mrs. McClanahan and Dr. Wilner will be in room 610 – if you have applications still to be submitted this fall, or if you have applications that will need to be submitted for January deadlines, come in and get some work done!

Please join Dean Zelaya in Foundation Hall during lunch on Thursday November 9th to learn more about getting involved in the NewGen Peacebuilders program.  There will be a representative on campus to answer any questions you may have.  Bring your lunch and join us!

Still alive and ever-evolving after several years in its New York City and Chicago productions, “Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind” is an ensemble experiment in presenting 30 plays in 60 minutes (though due to the rules of the NCTC High School Play Festival at which we will perform this weekend, our version is 22 plays in 45 minutes). Each two-minute play is performed in random order with an interactive audience. This eclectic collection of comic, dramatic, and just plain wacky plays will add up to an evening of theater unlike anything you’ve experienced

Mr. Arthur demonstrated TEAMWORK and KINDNESS when he offered to cover a colleague’s class when she had to leave early for a dentist appointment. Thank you, Mr. Arthur!

Constantin Dornberg, Thomas Fromke, Abhi Gadudasu, Logan Gray, Connor Hynes, Meghan McClanahan, Zoe Smith, and Mallory Vance showed PASSION by spending their day off learning the job search skills needed to pursue a summer job or internship!

Lauren Skolaris and Frances Bragg demonstrated KINDNESS when they comforted a friend who was having a tough day.

Emma-Kate Bentley-Gottel showed RESPECT when she took responsibility for an accident she caused.

Come learn about Rustic Pathways travel and service programs and hear from Cannon students who have been a part of Rustic’s programs.

10/27: Cougars On-Site Workshop for Juniors. Open to students in the Class of 2019 who are interested in finding a job or internship.  Topics covered include: Resume and Cover Letter Writing, Interviewing Skills and Networking.  This is an optional workshop presented from 9 – 2 during a school break.  A more in-depth course which will  allow students to complete a resume and cover letter, participate in a mock interview and etiquette lunch, and develop a networking contact list will be offered through the Winterm program.  Juniors who cannot take the Winterm course and are interested in the 10/27 COS Workshop must register by October 18th by emailing Kristin McClanahan atkmcclanahan@cannonschool.org.  Space is limited.

10/27: Cougars On-Site Workshop for Juniors. Open to students in the Class of 2019 who are interested in finding a job or internship.  Topics covered include: Resume and Cover Letter Writing, Interviewing Skills and Networking.  This is an optional workshop presented from 9 – 2 during a school break.  A more in-depth course which will  allow students to complete a resume and cover letter, participate in a mock interview and etiquette lunch, and develop a networking contact list will be offered through the Winterm program.  Juniors who cannot take the Winterm course and are interested in the 10/27 COS Workshop must register by October 18th by emailing Kristin McClanahan atkmcclanahan@cannonschool.org.  Space is limited.

Seniors: The deadline to apply for Cannon nominations for Jefferson or Danforth Scholars is Oct. 25th. Submit the Request for Nomination form, the required essay(s), and a list of activities/resume to Ms. Mann via google doc by 3 pm on Oct. 25th.

Juniors: The deadline to submit an application for Cannon nomination to NC Governor’s School is Oct. 25th. Submit the Nomination Cover page, Basic Info and Nomination Discipline Form, Essays 1 and 2, Personal Readiness Form, and 2 completed recommendation forms to Ms. Mann as a printed packet by 3 pm on Wednesday, Oct. 25th at 3 pm.

10th graders interested in a fantastic 3-day HOBY Leadership Seminar this summer should submit these two items to Ms. Mann no later than Oct. 25:

  1. Brief paragraph detailing why you want to participate in HOBY.
  2. List of activities/resume

Come learn about WFI program. WFI allows you to experience a career pathway for a week through hands-on activities, excursions and networking with leaders in various fields and industries.

Wake Forest will offer Institutes in: Biosciences and Engineering; Business and Entrepreneurship; Dance; Debate and Public Advocacy; Documentary Film; Health and Exercise Sports Science; Law; Leadership; Medicine; Neuroscience; Psychology; Sports Marketing; Sports Medicine; Technology; Visual Arts

Rustic Pathways  will be on Campus!           

Come learn about Rustic Pathways travel and service programs and hear from Cannon students who have been a part of Rustic’s programs.

10/27: Cougars On-Site Workshop for Juniors. Open to students in the Class of 2019 who are interested in finding a job or internship.  Topics covered include: Resume and Cover Letter Writing, Interviewing Skills and Networking.  This is an optional workshop presented from 9 – 2 during a school break.  A more in-depth course which will  allow students to complete a resume and cover letter, participate in a mock interview and etiquette lunch, and develop a networking contact list will be offered through the Winterm program.  Juniors who cannot take the Winterm course and are interested in the 10/27 COS Workshop must register by October 18th by emailing Kristin McClanahan atkmcclanahan@cannonschool.org.  Space is limited.

College Admission Representatives Visiting Cannon School: Visits are open to current seniors, juniors and sophomores.  Students should register to attend on their Family Connection site and must request permission from the teacher of the class they will me be missing before attending.

Washington University– Private, suburban St. Louis, Missouri, 7400 Undergrads

Touted as a Midwestern alternative to the East Coast Ivies. Offers over 90 fields of study with a focus on interdisciplinary studies.  Known offer the best on campus food and dormitories.

 

October 23rd

Embry-Riddle -Daytona Beach– Private, Small City, Daytona Beach, FL, 5300 Undergrads

The world’s largest accredited university specializing in aviation and aerospace. The school offers 46 undergraduate degrees.  The school owns their own fleet of various aircraft. 165 clubs and Greek life are available outside of the classroom.

 

Baylor University– Private, Suburban, Waco, TX, 14000 Undergrads

The largest Baptist university in the world and the oldest institution of higher learning in Texas. The school has 140 degrees to choose from and more than 25% of the students major in a business field. The school prioritizes hiring the “best” professors who are passionate about teaching.

Sewanee: The University of the South – Private, Rural, Tennessee, 1600 Undergrads

America’s only university owned & governed by the Episcopal Church. The liberal arts school offers outside the classroom study opportunities including a semester at Yale’s Directed Research Program. Also known for their Outing Club.

 

Rhodes College– Private, Small City, Memphis, TN, 2000 Undergrads

A liberal arts college, the campus is known as one of the most beautiful in the country.  Their “Compassionate Campus Initiative” promotes speakers, forums and classes to make Rhodes “a kinder and more mindful community”. There is a 10 to 1 student/faculty ratio and 75% of students complete an internship prior to graduating. Profiled in the book “Colleges That Change Lives”.

 

Kalamazoo College – Private, Small City, Michigan, 1500 Undergrads

Liberal arts college 35 miles from Lake Michigan.  Students required to complete the “K Plan” which is a personalized course schedule that includes experiential learning and independent research. Most students complete an internship or externship.

 

Wesleyan University – Private, Middletown, CT, 2900 Undergrads

A liberal arts college where students, with the help of faculty, can develop their own unique programs of study. Small class sizes and an intellectually lively campus.

 

Assumption College – Private, Worcester, MA 2240 Undergrads

A private Roman Catholic liberal arts college, the school emphasizes spiritual growth regardless of the student’s religion.  It offers strong programs in business and professional studies.  The college also offers a campus in the heart of Rome, Italy.

Hofstra University – Private,  New York metropolitan area, 6900 Undergrads

Offers over 100 academic dual degree programs; 17 athletic teams that compete at the Division 1 level.  The university operates Long Island’s oldest public radio station.

 

St. Lawrence University– Private, Small Town, New York, 2400 Undergrads

The liberal arts college located between the Adirondacks and capitol of Canada offers access to international government, cultural & social opportunities & outdoor recreation.

October 31st

Lynchburg College– Private, Small City, Lynchburg, VA, 2100 Undergrads

Offering 51 areas of study including the in-demand and hard to find majors. The school markets a tight knit student body where all students live on campus until senior year and the newly renovated student center.

 

Catawba College – Private, Small Town, Salisbury, NC 1300 Undergrads

Offering over 70 fields of study including a distinctive majors in Music Business and Theater Arts Education. Their Academy for Teaching offers generous scholarships to prospective teachers with no repayment stipulation.  Also known for having one of the best college theaters in the country.

 

November 1st:  –

Miami University – Public, Small Town, Ohio, 16000 Undergrads.

Offers 120 majors including a number of programs that focus on global markets.  Also home to a China Business Program which offers hands-on experience overseas, language study and business coursework.  Miami has a strong Greek community with over 40 fraternities and sororities on campus.

 

Merrimack College– Private, Suburban, North Andover, MA, 3200 Undergrads A private college in the Roman Catholic, Augustinian tradition located 25 minutes outside of Boston.  It offers a strong co-op work program, small class sizes and 90 plus academic programs.

Columbia University: Private, Large City, NYC, NY, 8000 Undergrads

November 8th:

Wittenberg University – Private, Small City, Ohio, 1950 Undergrads The liberal arts university is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church.  Students of all faiths are encouraged to participate in services. In addition to a full array of majors, the school offers cooperative programs with other US schools including: Case Western, Columbia, Washington University & Duke.

November 9th:

Ringling College of Art & Design– Private,  (urban) Sarasota, FL, 1200 undergrads

A noted innovative visual arts college with a highly acclaimed computer animation program.  Also lauded as “the Most Wired Campus in the US” by Us News & World Report.

 

November 14th:

Lynn University– Private, Large Town, Florida, 2000 Undergrads

Just three miles from the beach, the school offers career-focused majors that help you build your resume before you graduate.  Consistently ranked as one of the top five most international universities in the US.
