During a time when black people were discouraged from learning how to read and write, Phillis Wheatley, a Senegal/Gambia-born black girl who was kidnapped and sold into slavery, defied them all and published a book of poetry. She’s not only the first African-American to have a work of poems published (endorsed by John Hancock and George Washington), but also one of the first women to do so.

Without hesitation, Jadon demonstrated KINDNESS and moved his legs so I could easily pass. Students interested in running for next year’s Honor Council should speak with Dean Booker or Ms. Lineberger.  The Council will be seeking 1 rising 10th, 1 rising 11th, and 3 rising 12th graders. Speech submissions are due by February 27th at 3pm.

Humanitas is going to collect supplies for a local charity called Soap N’ Hope that is led by our very own Amelie Kadackal ! On Day of Service, we are going to package and personalize the items we collect for the charity!

We are officially starting to collect supplies, so please bring in any travel size hygiene products (things like: shampoo, conditioner, bar/hand soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, etc…) that you might have grabbed from hotels or even pick up a few things from the grocery store or pharmacy.

Bring your items into advisory and we will come around and collect from your advisors room! The more the better!!! If you have any questions please contact Laine Kozlowski at lkozlowski@cannonschool.org.

“I’d like to major in theoretical mathematical physics.” – Dr. Walter McAfee

Walter Samuel McAfee was born September 2, 1914, in Ore City, Texas. He was born to Luther and Susie McAfee. His father was a mechanic and his mother was an educator. His parents’ lines of work both influenced his career later on in life.
After high school, McAfee enrolled in courses at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. He majored in Mathematics and earned his B.A. degree in 1934. In 1937, he earned his M.S. from Ohio State University. Once he graduated from college, McAfee began teaching math and biological sciences at a junior high school in Columbus, Ohio. He met a fellow teacher at the same middle school named Viola Winston. They got married in the early 1940s.

In 1942, McAfee joined the United States Army Signal Corps Engineering Laboratories at Fort Monmouth in Belmar, New Jersey. His knowledge about math afforded him the opportunity to work on the Project Diana team. Project Diana was a collaboration of engineers and physicists who studied Earth’s relationship to the moon. Using radar signal echoing, McAfee determined the theoretical calculations of the moon. Those calculations included radar cross-sections, coverage pattern, and distance of the moon. The team received echoing signals between the Earth and the moon in January of 1946. Thanks to McAfee’s contribution, Project Diana was a success. However, he was not recognized for his work until several months later. After the success of Project Diana, McAfee received the Rosenwald Fellowship. He then entered a doctoral program at Cornell University. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics in 1949. His primary focus was on nuclear collisions. While in school, he worked under the advisement of Hans Bethe who was known for his work with nuclear physics. After earning his Ph.D., McAfee returned to the Army. He made significant contributions to the study of nuclear weapon systems. He also assisted with satellite technology. McAfee continued working as a scientist at Fort Monmouth laboratory for the remainder of his career. He worked for the laboratory for 42 years. Over the span of his career, McAfee received awards and fellowships in honor of his work. Wiley College inducted him into the Science Hall of Fame. Dr. Walter McAfee died February 18, 1995. He was posthumously honored when the U.S. government established the McAfee Center at Fort Monmouth, a facility which contains the Information and Intelligence Warfare Electronic Directorate.

ALL athletes and actors participating in Thursday evening’s game/performance are required to park in STUDENT PARKING. The senior parking area is allowed for all grade students in the evening hours on Thursday. Athletes and actors may NOT use the faculty parking area behind or to the side of the Upper School.

ALL students attending either the playoff game OR the musical are REQUIRED TO PARK IN STUDENT PARKING on Thursday evening. Since we are hosting two large events, we need the parking at the CPAC and on Education Way along the wall, and US Faculty Parking areas to be reserved for on-campus guests. The senior parking area is allowed for all grade students in the evening hours on Thursday.

Madison Hardy showed great RESPECT for our fabric materials today when she reorganized the entire mess of fabrics in our storage cabinet. Thank you for keeping our materials in order Madison!

The Jazz Combo showed PASSION and played a super strong set at the UNCC Jazz Festival. They were tight, focused, and definitely swinging. The guest clinicians heard it too. We got amazing feedback on our judges sheets as well as during our 1-on-1 clinic with Dr. Will Campbell, who heads the jazz department at UNCC. The judges also gave “Outstanding Soloist” awards to Vincent Vaccaro, Davis Norton, Carter Otey, Abby Lowe, and Lucas Kabasakalian.

Sixteen members of our upper school MUN team went to Baltimore this weekend to compete at JHUMUNC.  We brought home two awards this weekend: Declan Hurley received the Outstanding Delegate award and Abhi Gadudasu made Honorable Mention.  Kate Nelson walked into her committee and by day 2 was highly involved in successful resolutions. Matthew Leonard was absolutely phenomenal in his committee AND a complete pleasure all weekend, serving as a great role model for our younger delegates and embodying MUN’s motto of “Decorum” perfectly. Jonah Presser, Rebecca Jones, Amelie Kadackal, Jessi Dickerson, and Lily Klett had the honor of participating in “Midnight Crisis” committees, which means they were awakened with political drama in the middle of the night and delegated until 4am. That takes serious PASSION.

This 2006 hit musical and winner of multiple Tony awards begins in the apartment of “Man In Chair,” a reclusive musical theater fanatic eager to play us a record of his favorite 1920s musical The Drowsy Chaperone. As he plays the record and offers his own wry commentary, the wacky musical comes to life before our eyes in spectacular fashion, serving up an irresistible concoction of sparkling old-school charm and contemporary snark.

Last Friday Reah Syed and Holly Springate attended the Learning Through Languages Symposium at UNC Chapel Hill. Their chosen topic was “El activismo de las Mujeres en el Oriente Medio y África del Norte” and they completed a research paper and media presentation completely in Spanish. They were awarded the honorable mention (2nd place) in the category of Advanced Language Scholarship and the honorable mention for their specific region, the Middle East and North Africa track. !Enhorabuena!
