Last Friday Reah Syed and Holly Springate attended the Learning Through Languages Symposium at UNC Chapel Hill. Their chosen topic was “El activismo de las Mujeres en el Oriente Medio y África del Norte” and they completed a research paper and media presentation completely in Spanish. They were awarded the honorable mention (2nd place) in the category of Advanced Language Scholarship and the honorable mention for their specific region, the Middle East and North Africa track. !Enhorabuena!

Classes and behind-the-wheel instruction will be provided by WatsOnWheels (https://www.watsonwheelsnc.com/).  WatsOnWheels has agreed to offer Cannon students a discount and provide the course for $350 per student.  The classes will be held Monday – Friday, April 1^st – 12th in Foundation Hall from 3:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Students must be 14½ years of age when the classes begin to be eligible to register. To complete the class, students must have thirty hours of class time and six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. After the class portion is complete, the instructor will coordinate with students individually to complete the behind-the-wheel requirements during their school drop periods or after school hours. The $350 fee is due on the first day of class and may be charged to the student’s Cannon School account or paid in the form of a check made out to “Watson Wheels LLC”.

This year’s dance is a semi-formal winter ball with the theme “ A Wintery, Starry Night.” We hope to have lots of surprises throughout the evening as we celebrate our community and dance the night away. Join DJ Phalse iD for a fabulous dance, great desserts, and a night of fun and entertainment!  Seniors will need to plan to arrive by 6:00pm while all others should arrive starting at 7:00pm.

Tickets will go on sale today, Wednesday, January 23rd. Pre-order ticket sales officially end on TODAY because we have to have a final count for food. Riley Venos demonstrated KINDNESS when he was playing football in the Quad with some friends during lunch, and Riley very discretely stopped play while three teachers walked through. It was both respectful and kind that he allowed us to pass.

Harrison Alexander, Tyler Smith, Deven Dighe, Andrew Andujar, Jake Hayworth, Nathan Campbell, Logan Bunce, Michael Miccoluci, Carter Rice, Johnathan Sultana, Caleb Campos, and Leland Raines all demonstrated TEAMWORK when they helped set up the MLK service event in The Mill and transport boxes to the Upper School.  We really appreciate your help, friends!

All members of the Black Student Affinity Group demonstrated PASSION by hosting the 2^nd Annual MLK Jr. Breakfast on Monday, January 21^st.  A special thanks goes out to Kayla Goldsberry and Angel Brown for their PASSION and leadership in organizing the event.

The Halfway There  winter dance is right around the corner on Saturday, Feb. 2nd! This year’s dance is a semi-formal winter ball with the theme “ A Wintery, Starry Night.” We hope to have lots of surprises throughout the evening as we celebrate our community and dance the night away. Join DJ Phalse iD for a fabulous dance, great desserts, and a night of fun and entertainment!  Seniors will need to plan to arrive by 6:00pm while all others should arrive starting at 7:00pm.

Tickets will go on sale today, Wednesday, January 23rd. Pre-order ticket sales officially end on Thursday, January 31st because we have to have a final count for food. The tickets are $12 in advance from January 23rd-January 31st and $15 if you are late to purchase including buying tickets at the door. You may get tickets by responding to the Google form that will be sent to your Cannon email account. For your convenience, you may choose to bill your account for the cost of the ticket. Rustic Pathways will be on campus January 30^th during lunch to share information on service, education and adventure programs for Summer 2019!  Many Cannon students have participated in Rustic Pathways programs and have had wonderful experiences. THIS FRIDAY (1/25) after school House Humanitas will be showing “Selma” in honor of MLK Day this past Monday! Stop by the film room on the second floor at 3:15 and enjoy!

Students for Constitutional Government will meet for lunch on Thursday, January 24th in Foundation Hall. We will be discussing American citizenship as it relates to the immigration debate. Grab some lunch and stop by!

College counseling will be hosting the Lunch & Learn session, “Intro to Military and Service Academies,” on Thursday, January 24^th, in THE CUBE. Students interested in learning about these opportunities and the application processes for the academies are invited to attend.

Model UN members: ALL team members interested in going to our conference at UNC Chapel Hill in February should attend an initial planning meeting on Tuesday, Jan 22!  (That means everyone—even if you are not going to JHUMUNC!) This is your chance to pick up a permission slip for MUNCH! We will meet during lunch in the library annex!
