ADVISORY AGENDA 2.5.19

“Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.”—Booker T. Washington

Booker T. Washington

Educator Booker T. Washington was one of the foremost African-American leaders of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born into slavery in Virginia in the mid-to-late 1850s, Booker T. Washington put himself through school and became a teacher after the Civil War. In 1881, he founded the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Alabama (now known as Tuskegee University), which grew immensely and focused on training African Americans in agricultural pursuits. He was also a political adviser and writer.

“Black History is American History” – Morgan Freeman

Image result for sojourner truth

Sojourner Truth (born Isabella Baumfree, c. 1797 to November 26, 1883) was an African-American abolitionist and women’s rights activist best-known for her speech on racial inequalities, “Ain’t I a Woman?”, delivered extemporaneously in 1851 at the Ohio Women’s Rights Convention.

Truth was born into slavery but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826. She devoted her life to the abolitionist cause and helped to recruit black troops for the Union Army. Although Truth began her career as an abolitionist, the reform causes she sponsored were broad and varied, including prison reform, property rights and universal suffrage.

ADVISORY AGENDA 2.1.19

“Hate, it has caused a lot of problems in the world, but has not solved one yet.”  – Maya Angelou

Greensboro first day

On February 1, 1960, four African American college students sat down at a lunch counter at Woolworth’s in Greensboro, North Carolina, and politely asked for service. Their request was refused. When asked to leave, they remained in their seats. Their passive resistance and peaceful sit-down demand helped ignite a youth-led movement to challenge racial inequality throughout the South.

Riley Venos demonstrated KINDNESS when he was playing football in the Quad with some friends during lunch, and Riley very discretely stopped play while three teachers walked through. It was both respectful and kind that he allowed us to pass.

All members of the Black Student Affinity Group demonstrated PASSION by hosting the 2nd Annual MLK Jr. Breakfast on Monday, January 21st.  A special thanks goes out to Kayla Goldsberry and Angel Brown for their PASSION and leadership in organizing the event.
