***Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership is an application-based summer leadership seminar open to current sophomores who would participate in a program held on a college campus in June. HOBY’s State Leadership Seminar is designed to help high school sophomores recognize their leadership talents and apply them to become effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, and community. When looking for students to nominate from Cannon, we are looking for more than just a good GPA. We are looking for students with some common attributes such as: outstanding communication skills, critical thinking, creative problem solving, strong decision making, courage, and an interest in community service. If you’re interested in learning more, the flyer below is your invitation for an upcoming Lunch and Learn with College Counseling. Governor’s School Applications are OPEN!

The Governor’s School is an application-based, four-week residential summer program for talented high school students. It allows students to explore an academic or arts discipline on a college campus. Cannon School can nominate as many as 2 students from the academic disciplines (English, World Languages (Spanish at Governor’s School West), Mathematics, Natural Science, and Social Science). Regardless of the academic disciplines that students choose to apply for, Cannon School can only nominate 2 students.

If students apply to the performing/visual arts disciplines (Art, Choral Music, Instrumental Music, Dance, and Theater), Cannon School can nominate an unlimited number of students, if the students are solid candidates. Keep in mind that an audition will be required for these programs.

The Cannon Upper School Paper (CUSP) is the independent voice of Cannon Upper School community. Our goal is to unbiasedly report about changes in news, sports, and life within the Cannon community. We also work to amplify the voices of students, teachers, and faculty within the community of pressing issues and opinions.
 

In this edition, take a deep dive into the Cannon community through a new faculty spotlight, updates on Cannon School’s football team, an overview of Club Fair, and solutions to the cafeteria crisis. If current events are more your style, learn about the implications of the summer of Supreme Court Cases, September’s Self-Improvement Month, and the top 8 films of this summer.

Fall 2022 Driver Education Program (Virtual)

This year, Cannon School has contracted with a local company to offer a virtual driver education program during the fall semester. Classes and behind-the-wheel instruction will be provided by WatsOnWheels (https://www.watsonwheelsnc.com/). WatsOnWheels has agreed to offer Cannon students a discount and provide the course for $450 per student.  The classes will be held Monday, November 7th through Friday, November 18th from 4:00 – 7:00.

Students must be 14½ years of age when the classes begin to be eligible to register. To complete the class, students must have thirty hours of class time and six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction.  We hope to offer another class in the spring through WatsOnWheels, but we have yet to schedule specific dates. 

After the class portion is complete, the instructor will coordinate with students individually to complete the behind-the-wheel requirements during their school drop periods or after school hours.

The $450 fee is due on the first day of class and may be charged to the student’s Cannon School account or paid in the form of a check made out to “Watson Wheels LLC”.

The fashion show is at Gibson Mill on October 27th. They are looking for volunteers to help with tickets, seating, timing, etc. They have many different roles to fill and any extra hands would be a great asset.

Lauren Childress showed TEAMWORK when she volunteered to run the timer when the varsity volleyball team destroyed PD.

Chase Erdin, Jeeti Khurana, Sarah Little, Ashwika Battu, Fiona Chen, and Michael Wang all demonstrated TEAMWORK and KINDNESS when they helped two other classmates with some challenging math concepts when their math teacher was absent.

School Year Abroad (SYA)  – Visit to Cannon School

When:   9/28/22 9:45 – 10:15 am

Where:  The Cube

Who:     Open to 9-11th grade students. Please register through SCOIR to attend. 9th graders can go directly to The Cube and do not need to register.

What:    SYA offers the chance to spend a semester or your sophomore, junior or senior year in France, Italy, or Spain. Students attend classes, live with a host family, and participate in educational travel.

Cole Frei, Phenix Brown, Julia Schattner, Julia Ellington, KG Smith, Charlotte Ostema, Sajan Patel, Grace Hurtado Willa Needham, and Gabbi Coppa demonstrated PASSION for learning when they created and presented slides on tips for notetaking and study skills with their fellow historians during office hours. Thank you all for being awesome. 

Henry Dryden saved the day –and runny noses– with his KINDNESS when he fetched Kleenex for the classroom from Miss Hulin. Henry, just one thing to say: well done, you!

Melissa Remmey, Leighton Evans, Brian Murphy, and Gates Ravin demonstrated TEAMWORK and PASSION for Cannon School by collaborating on getting the spirit wall ready for HoCo!

Nicholas Micolucci showed TEAMWORK when he hefted a heavy apple press on and off a truck to assist lower school in making apple cider. Beast mode, Nicholas!!!

Eli Snodgrass and Samyha Suffren demonstrated TEAMWORK when they filled in as a Senior Buddy for a Jr.K student.
