QPR Question-Persuade-Refer

Suicide Prevention Training

TODAY, September 29th, 3:15-4:30PM Foundation Hall

So we can have enough materials & snacks: RSVP to ahoffman@cannonschool.org

What is QPR?

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer — 3 simple steps that anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Each year thousands of Americans, like you, are saying “Yes” to saving the life of a friend, colleague, sibling, or neighbor.

In 90 Minutes, You Can Become a Gatekeeper

According to the Surgeon General’s National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (2001), a gatekeeper is someone in a position to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide. Gatekeepers include parents, friends, neighbors, teachers, ministers, doctors, nurses, office supervisors, squad leaders, foremen, police officers, advisors, caseworkers, firefighters, and many others who are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide.

As a QPR-trained Gatekeeper you will learn to:

[if !supportLists]v  [endif]recognize the warning signs of suicide

[if !supportLists]v  [endif]know how to offer hope

[if !supportLists]v  [endif]know how to get help and save a life

QPR is recognized by Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations as a “best practices” model and was selected by the American Psychiatric Association’s Task Force on Patient Safety as an “exemplary suicide risk reduction approach.”

TEGS!! – House Party at the Gazebo!  Wear your TEGS gear on Thursday and get a free dessert.  Bring a blanket too!

Senior Picture make-ups will be in the CPAC from 8:00-noon

Last year, in the first year of our program, the Cannon wrestling team finished 10th in the state. We also defeated several top 10 teams in dual meet matches. Despite each of our wrestlers being first year wrestlers, we sent 9 wrestlers to the state tournament and 6 of them placed in the top 6. Still, we are in need of more wrestlers, as we were unable to fill all of the weight classes last season, for both Varsity and JV. On Wednesday, we will have a wrestling interest meeting in Coach Helfant’s classroom (Middle School Room 286) during high school lunch at 11:20. Grab your lunch, head to Coach Helfant’s room, and you will get all the information you need for the upcoming season. This will include scheduling, team gear and apparel, and expectations. Whether you have never stepped foot on a wrestling mat, or have several years experience, wrestling will absolutely benefit you as you prepare for your spring seasons or look to improve as an overall athlete. Just ask any of your coaches. Everyone has the opportunity to be successful on our team.
