Fall 2020 Driver Education Program (Virtual)
This year, Cannon School has contracted with a local company to offer a virtual driver education program during the fall semester. Classes and behind-the-wheel instruction will be provided by WatsOnWheels (https://www.watsonwheelsnc.com/). WatsOnWheels has agreed to offer Cannon students a discount and provide the course for $350 per student. The classes will be held Monday – Friday, November 9th – 20th from 4:00 – 7:00 (with 2 make up days to follow).
Students must be 14½ years of age when the classes begin to be eligible to register. To complete the class, students must have thirty hours of class time and six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. We hope to offer another class in the spring through WatsOnWheels, but we have yet to schedule specific dates.
After the class portion is complete, the instructor will coordinate with students individually to complete the behind-the-wheel requirements during their school drop periods or after school hours.
The $350 fee is due on the first day of class and may be charged to the student’s Cannon School account or paid in the form of a check made out to “Watson Wheels LLC”.

Hey Everyone! My name is Alicia Equan. This past summer I started a business where I sell bracelets in support of BLM. Each month I donate 70% of my proceeds to an organization that fights against social injustices. This month, in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, I started a new bracelet collection called “LatinXLove”. At the end of October, I will be donating my proceeds to an organization that supports Hispanic and Latinx people.

Hello all my name is Josh Reid and I am an 11th Grader in Mr. West Advisory. Eliada is a home to over 700 children and youth annually, as well as a 5-star child development center, Residential and Day mental health program and many other amazing resources. We need your help to provide these children with coats so they can enjoy all the activities a child should be able to enjoy without getting sick especially in times like these. All Coats in any kind of condition as long as usable will be acceptable. Flyers will be placed throughout the upper school and I will place a box in the upper school atrium (Area you pass after you walk up the stairs from the parking entrance to the upper school near the senior lounge) labeled coat drive and you can drop of coats until the 20th of October. Thank you for help everything is greatly appreciated.
Cannon School Students Spread (Project) JOY
In this time of uncertainty and isolation, Drake Griffith ’21 was certain of a few constants—one being that the senior citizen population, already isolated before the COVID-19 crisis, would struggle more than ever before to connect with others. That was how Drake felt about his own grandmother before she died this past April. “My Nana didn’t have a whole lot of company even before COVID-19. This pandemic made things so much worse for her” he said. “I wanted to do something to help other older adults who may be experiencing the same type of isolation and loneliness she felt.”
In his grandmother’s memory, Drake founded “Project Spread JOY” in April, JOY standing for “Joining Older Adults and Youth.” The concept is simple—pair teen volunteers with older adults for conversation, camaraderie, and connection either through the mail (pen pal services) or by phone. With the partnership of seniors Reilly Kungl from Cannon and Harrison Powe from Lake Norman Charter, Project Spread JOY has had tremendous success in spreading JOY to, and making connections with, over 5,000 senior citizens in ten states through the efforts of its team of over 150 teen volunteers. Project Spread JOY has since incorporated as a non-profit company. To reach its ultimate goal of spreading JOY nationally, Project Spread JOY is looking for more teen volunteers who want to help spread JOY.
