Each year, in February, we observe Black History Month to celebrate the many achievements of African Americans in every field, from science and the arts to politics and religion, and to recognize their central role in U.S. history.

This celebration has its origins in 1915 when historian and author Dr. Carter G. Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. This organization is now known as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). Through this organization, Dr. Woodson initiated the first Negro History Week in February 1926. Dr. Woodson selected the week in February that included the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, two key figures in the history of Black Americans. In 1976, ASALH expanded this commemoration of Black history in the United States from a week-long observance to Black History Month, also known as African American History Month. President Ford issued a message on the commemoration of Black History Month in the same year.

Our Upper School theme for this year’s Black History Month celebration is Black Success Across the Decades. Be on the lookout for engaging posts via the Deans’ Daily Download.

Without being asked, Vivi Lowe displayed KINDNESS when she spent her free time cleaning up in the art room. Thank you Vivi for cleaning the art supplies in the sink! All of the artists who don’t clean up after themselves appreciate your kindness and generosity!

All able-bodied individuals should be using the stairs. Please speak with your grade-level Dean if you need special permission. Students using the elevator without special permission or a demonstrated need will be issued an infraction.

The elevator is a vital resource for those who need it. By prioritizing usage for individuals who are not physically able to use the stairs, we contribute to a more accessible and inclusive community. Your cooperation is really appreciated!!
