Fall 2019 Driver Education Program

This year, Cannon School has contracted with a local company to offer a driver education program during the fall semester. Classes and behind-the-wheel instruction will be provided by WatsOnWheels (https://www.watsonwheelsnc.com/).  WatsOnWheels has agreed to offer Cannon students a discount and provide the course for $350 per student.  The classes will be held Monday – Friday, November 4th- 15th in Foundation Hall from 3:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.

Students must be 14½ years of age when the classes begin to be eligible to register. To complete the class, students must have thirty hours of class time and six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction.  We hope to offer another class in the spring through WatsOnWheels, but we have yet to schedule specific dates.

After the class portion is complete, the instructor will coordinate with students individually to complete the behind-the-wheel requirements during their school drop periods or after school hours.

The $350 fee is due on the first day of class and may be charged to the student’s Cannon School account or paid in the form of a check made out to “Watson Wheels LLC”.

Juniors interested in learning about the Governor’s School of NC summer program should plan to attend the Lunch & Learn on Thursday, September 19th in The Cube.  This session will explain the program, the timeline for the nomination process and allow for a Q&A with Reah Syed, who attended Governor School last summer.


Seniors: The deadline to apply for Cannon nominations for Jefferson, Centennial or Belk Scholarships is Oct. 15th. Submit the required materials to Dr. Wilner via email by 3 pm on Oct.15th. If you are uncertain of what to submit, please speak with your college counselor.

Students for Constitutional Government will meet for lunch this Friday, September 20th in Foundation Hall. We will go over the purpose of the club and discuss essential questions regarding liberty and government. Each attendee will receive a free copy of the Constitution!



The United Schutzhund Clubs of America will be hosting the USCA National Show for German Shepherd Dogs on October 10 through 13th, at the Iredell County Fairgrounds. This event is shaping up to be the single largest breed show for German Shepherd Dogs in U.S. history, and we could use many volunteers on October 12 and 13th. We are looking for student groups that would be interested in earning service-hour credit to meet their National Honor Society, Beta Club, Key Club, ROTC, FFA, 4-H, etc. requirements. Student responsibilities could include being runners for judges’ scoresheets and refreshment needs, assisting the tabulation and registration teams, at the Information booths, and general assistance for the event. If you have group sponsors and/or students who would like to know more about this opportunity or to earn service hours while participating at this historic event, please have them contact me for further information. Fall 2019 Driver Education Program

This year, Cannon School has contracted with a local company to offer a driver education program during the fall semester. Classes and behind-the-wheel instruction will be provided by WatsOnWheels (https://www.watsonwheelsnc.com/).  WatsOnWheels has agreed to offer Cannon students a discount and provide the course for $350 per student.  The classes will be held Monday – Friday, November 4th- 15th in Foundation Hall from 3:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.

Students must be 14½ years of age when the classes begin to be eligible to register. To complete the class, students must have thirty hours of class time and six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction.  We hope to offer another class in the spring through WatsOnWheels, but we have yet to schedule specific dates.

After the class portion is complete, the instructor will coordinate with students individually to complete the behind-the-wheel requirements during their school drop periods or after school hours.

The $350 fee is due on the first day of class and may be charged to the student’s Cannon School account or paid in the form of a check made out to “Watson Wheels LLC”.

Homecoming 5k and Fun Run

After a fun night at the Homecoming game, join us Saturday, October 5 for this year’s annual Homecoming 5k and Fun Run!
Runners and walkers of all levels are welcome to participate. Participation fee is $20. Prizes will be awarded for the top 3 male and female runners.

Juniors interested in learning about the Governor’s School of NC summer program should plan to attend the Lunch & Learn on Thursday, September 18th in The Cube.  This session will explain the program, the timeline for the nomination process and allow for a Q&A with Reah Syed, who attended Governor School last summer.


Seniors: The deadline to apply for Cannon nominations for Jefferson, Centennial or Belk Scholarships is Oct. 15th. Submit the required materials to Dr. Wilner via email by 3 pm on Oct.15th. If you are uncertain of what to submit, please speak with your college counselor.

Juniors: The deadline to submit an application for Cannon nomination to NC Governor’s School is Oct. 15th.Materials must be submitted to Dr. Wilner as a printed packet by 3 pm on Friday, Oct. 15th. If you are interested in applying, please try to attend the LUNCH & LEARN about Governor’s School THIS Thursday in the CUBE. Also, let your college counselor know, and s/he will help you understand the requirements for applying (which includes two letters of recommendation).

Sophomores: Interested in a fantastic 3-day HOBY Leadership Seminar this summer? Please read about HOBY online and submit these two items to Dr. Wilner via email no later than 3 pm on Oct. 15th:

Kenlee Griffin demonstrated PASSION when he volunteered to create and present a powerpoint on Judaism for history class.

Chase Hensley demonstrated TEAMWORK by completing the expeditious transfer of critical Class Trip materials to a Dean from a teacher on another part of campus.

The math department wants to give a shout out to the 60 students and 3 faculty members that showed COURAGE and PASSION when they signed-in to the Math Café at the very successful Grand Opening event on Friday…some of them even came for math help! Michael Micolucci and Andrew Andujar demonstrated TEAMWORK when they helped take a cart back to the Lower School for a teacher.

Aubrey Haas demonstrated PASSION when she taught herself how to write her name in cuneiform.

Will Zandhuis demonstrated KINDNESS when he went out of his way to hold the door for Dean Zelaya and her children.

Carter Rice demonstrated KINDNESS as he helped a fellow student break down and carry a heavy table after the club fair.

Jadon Williams and DJ Nix displayed KINDNESS as they helped the deans breakdown and carry tables after the club fair.

Morgan Stilphen showed RESPECT for our building by cleaning up glitter that had spilled in the hall.

Marielle Bumgarner and Tierney Finn demonstrated KINDNESS when they volunteered part of her student choice block to clean two teachers whiteboards.



The Upper School Model UN team is hosting an INTEREST MEETINGon MONDAY, SEPT 9 in the Library Annex during lunch!!!! Come hear more about what we will be doing this year and how you can get committed to MUN—or just give it a try! Permission slips for CHARMUN will be distributed. Attendance at this meeting counts for veteran delegates too, so current MUN members should plan to attend!

Math Café Grand Opening event on Friday, September 6, 2019 in room 606 (the ACC room) before school, starting at 7:30 AM . There will be food and drinks and mathematics, served up fresh by your favorite math faculty members. Math questions are welcome, but not required to attend. Regular Math Café hours:
